Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about skin checks, appointments, procedures and what to expect at Dermadocs Skin Cancer Clinic in Parkside, Adelaide.

No –a referral is not required to be seen at Dermadocs. However, you may wish to provide one as this helps facilitate correspondence and sharing of information with your regular GP.

The doctors at Dermadocs can:

  • diagnose skin lesions of concern
  • perform full body skin checks
  • complete automated total body photography for mapping of all moles and skin lesions
  • biopsy lesions of concern
  • perform surgical and non surgical treatment of skin cancer

Your doctor will start by discussing your personal and family history to assess any risk factors for skin cancer, such as a history of sun exposure, as well as identifying any specific concerns you have.
For a full body skin check you will be asked to undress so your doctor can examine your entire skin surface. A chaperone can be provided if requested. Using a dermatoscope, your doctor will carefully check skin on the face, ears, scalp, neck, torso, upper and lower limbs, between toes and on the soles of your feet. The groin is not routinely examined, but please indicate if you have noticed lesions here or wish this to be specifically checked.

With consent, photographs of salient lesions will be taken and analysed.

Spot Check: Quick examination of a specific lesion or area of concern. This is ideal for patients who've noticed a new or changing spot and want it looked at promptly.

Full Body Check: A thorough head-to-toe examination of the skin, where a doctor checks all areas of the skin surface for any suspicious lesions, unusual moles, or early signs of skin cancer.

Skin Check PLUS+: Total body photography of your entire skin surface, mole mapping of every mole, dermoscopy assessment of suspicious lesions, AI assessment and doctor consult.

Yes. With your consent, Dermadocs routinely keeps photographic records of salient skin lesions for future reference.

You will be asked to dress down if it is a full body skin check or if lesions are in areas that need detailed assessment. Female and male doctors are available for your comfort, and a chaperone can be provided if requested.

Your doctor will discuss options with you, including:

  • Biopsy to test the lesion for cancer
  • Recommended treatment or removal
  • Scheduling a follow-up appointment

If time permits, a biopsy can sometimes be done immediately on-site.

This depends on the doctor’s assessment and the urgency of the biopsy. When possible, biopsies can be performed during your initial visit. If not, a separate appointment may be scheduled.

If a skin cancer is found:

  • Your doctor will discuss the diagnosis and recommend next steps.
  • Your regular GP will also be informed

Yes – where appropriate, for certain low-grade and superficial skin cancers, non-surgical treatment can be provided. Options may include topical therapy, photodynamic therapy and cryotherapy.

Follow-up timing varies and is individualised to your needs.

For repeat skin checks, those at high-risk are routinely seen 6-12 monthly.  Those at very high risk may be seen even more frequently.

After a surgical procedure or treatment a review at 1-2 weeks is usually scheduled.
